Emerging Historians
When we invest in the foundations of our community, we invest in our future. Our Emerging Historians program supports and empowers the next generation of heritage advocates, ensuring the resilience of Toronto’s heritage.
The Emerging Historians program supports and empowers the next generation of heritage advocates, providing them with mentorship, training, and paid work. Emerging historians are current students, recent graduates, and professionals in the first five years of building their careers.
In 2022, we worked with 28 emerging historians. These young professionals wrote digital stories, interactive map tours, developed and led walks, and worked across every department of the charity. With the help of our generous donors and emerging historian champions, we were able to offer longer contracts, including two six-month positions for a Programs Assistant and Digital Content Coordinator. As a direct result of our Equity Heritage Initiative, 15 of the 20 unique tours presented in 2022 were developed by emerging historians. This marks an important shift in the Tours program, as we strive to diversify the stories we are telling and the voices being amplified through the program, we are empowering emerging historians with more curatorial control and direct public programming experience.
If you are interested in joining us as an emerging historian, be sure to check the Emerging Historian Opportunities page often or sign up for our E-newsletter to be the first to hear when new opportunities are announced.
