An Unrecognized Contribution: Women and Their Work in 19th-Century Toronto
Author: Elizabeth Gillan Muir
Publisher: Dundurn Press
Elizabeth Gillian Muir has compiled An Unrecognized Contribution: Women and Their Work in 19th-Century Toronto from her extensive research on women in Upper Canada and the Christian Church, which included referencing the city’s early street directories and personal diaries. This wide-ranging collection of biographies has been divided into chapters on Torontonian artists and authors, proprietors of boarding houses and taverns, and professionals including doctors, teachers, nurses, and lawyers.
Muir shows how these women were integral to the city’s commerce and culture, and how the work of women strengthened the city’s safety net. With An Unrecognized Contribution, Muir holds up the overlooked work of women providing a female-centred view of Toronto’s heritage.
