Montgomery Square
Redevelopment
Montgomery Square adaptively reuses a historic post office situated on a National Historic Site, highlighting its architectural elements, and providing an expanded mixed-use program for the surrounding neighbourhood. The 1936 Art Deco heritage post office was retained and rehabilitated, showcasing a commitment to the historic integrity of the structure that surpassed a façade retention.
Rising twenty-seven storeys and cantilevering out above the post office, the new condo emphasizes the Yonge Street façade of the heritage building and provides a generous terrace on the third floor which overlooks the forecourt and connects both the upper and lower public realm. The residential addition has been carefully articulated on all sides to considerately address the heritage building and surrounding context, by terracing to the west, the tower transitions to the existing low-rise neighbourhood.
The interior conservation scope looked to repair and highlight the historic features of the building, showcasing the original simplicity of the material palette and design. Coloured terrazzo floors, some of which were uncovered during the project, were refurbished and the stairwells restored. At the north and south stairwells were retained and restored, including the terrazzo and steel stairs, and decorative stainless-steel railings.
