Discover Toronto’s first Chinatown and its humble roots in the Ward with laundries, restaurants, and community associations.
Follow along with historian and author Arlene Chan on this virtual tour as she uncovers how Chinatown West settled around the intersection of Dundas Street and Spadina Avenue as a colourful neighbourhood, filled with diverse foods, shops, and businesses.
Virtual tours are held via Zoom, are led in real-time by a tour guide, and last approximately 90 minutes.

About your tour guide: Arlene Chan, author, Chinatown historian, and retired librarian, has written seven books and contributed to numerous publications about the history, culture, and traditions of the Chinese in Canada. She has been recognized with the Heritage Toronto Special Achievement Award, Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Award, and Woman of Distinction Award. Arlene serves as the president of the Jean Lumb Foundation and advisor for Ontario Infrastructure’s Heritage Interpretation Working Group and the Toronto Public Library’s Chinese Canadian Archive.
For over 25 years we have been touring through the city with groups, learning some fun facts, little-known stories, and about the amazing people that have contributed to Toronto's heritage.
Many of our tours are developed and led by those who are part of our Emerging Historians program.
