Join us for an immersive experience exploring African and Caribbean placemaking and culture in Toronto from across the diaspora.
Drop in between 5pm-10pm on December 14 for an immersive experience exploring Black placemaking and how people of African and Caribbean descent have created a place for themselves across the diaspora.
United by heritage, the Black community consistently shapes new culture in Toronto creating place and making history. This event provides a nuanced understanding of identity, belonging, and cultural resilience within a diverse and dynamic community. A map-making activity will help identify spaces in Toronto where you’ve noticed bottom-up placemaking in the Black community, and places important to Black identity in Toronto. We’ll craft vision boards using materials from African and Caribbean culture and heritage, while also exploring archival content from our city’s Black history. We’ll discuss how our histories create cultural hotspots in the city, and how Black culture, and what we do in the city today, becomes the heritage of tomorrow. We’ll have open decks all night, all DJs are welcome, or come learn how to spin! Watch short films from local Black filmmakers and engage with the community to celebrate our stories.
This program was developed by Programs Coordinator Selma Elkhazin under the Equity Heritage Initiative funded by TD and is offered in partnership with Noha Collective. Insights from the activities will be used to inform a digital story about Black placemaking in Toronto.
